2010 FIFA World Cup

The National Travel health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) have issued some guidance for UK football fans in preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which is being hosted by South Africa from June 11 to July 11 2010.

Malaria chemoprophylaxis is not required for visits to the host cities themselves. If fans are combining their trip with a safari, however, or are planning to visit other areas of South Africa, appropriate preventative measures may be required.

Travellers should be up to date with the schedule of vaccinations as required in the UK, including MMR. Hepatitis A and typhoid are also recommended for travel to South Africa. These are transmitted via contaminated food and water, along with traveller’s diarrhoea.

There is no reciprocal health care agreement between South Africa and the United Kingdom and so fans will require comprehensive medical insurance, as medical assistance can be costly. Medical facilities in urban areas are generally of a high standard, however in more rural areas they can be basic. Travellers requiring regular medication should carry adequate supplies, as some medications may not be readily available. The regulations regarding medicines in South Africa may be different to those in the UK and these should be checked with the relevant authorities prior to travel. This is particularly important for anyone wishing to travel with controlled drugs.

Local transmission of H1N1 virus has diminished in South Africa since October 2009, however any travellers with influenza-like symptoms are advised to stay at home in the UK and seek medical advice.
