Following a recommendation by the Commission on Human Medicines (CHM) bonjela and bonjela Cool Mint gel should no longer be used by children and young people under the age of 16. This is due to Choline Salicylate which is the main active ingredient in these products. New packaging and usage advice will be issued
The changes has been made following a investigation into links between topical Salicylates and Reye's Syndrome. The changes are precautionary measures and brings these products in line with the regulations of other oral salicylate containing products which were revised in 2002.
We advise you not to use bonjela and bonjela Cool Mint on children under 16 years of age. bonjela teething gel can safely be used on children between two months and 16 years as it has a different formulation and does not contain choline salicylate.
